'Le génie du mal'
This statue is named, 'Le génie du mal' meaning 'The Genius of Evil'.
St. Paul's Cathedral in Leige, Belgium is home to this marble statue. This Cathedral was founded in the 10th century, rebuilt in the 13th, and restored in the mid 19th century. It is the seat of the diocese of Liege.
The statue Le génie du mal or The Genius of Evil is also referred to as Lucifer of Liège. The Belgian artist Guillaume Geefs created it out of white marble, in 1848. This statue replaced a statue done by Joseph Geefs, his brother. That statue titled “L’ange du mal” or “Angel of Evil” was deemed by the Catholic Church fathers as too sexual and would distract the females from listening to the sermons. The reasoning given was in the pose, the slightly opened knees, and not enough cloth across the lap.
It's obvious the newer image of Lucifer appears more muscular and sexual then the first! What a terrible excuse! However, the real question is why would you bring an image of Lucifer into a 'Church' in the first place! The Bible strictly forbids this (Exodus 20:4).
So where in the Cathedral is this statue?! It is located at the backside base of the elaborate wooden pulpit with a twin staircase, the curved railing of the semi-spiral stairs reiterates the arc of the wings, which are retracted on the statue. This pulpit is called in French 'Chaire De Vérité' meaning 'Seat of Truth'.
This statue is depicting Lucifer as a beautiful man, physically fit, and seated almost nude with a cloth draped over his lap, with his bat like wings and talons that form a mandorla. If you don't know what a mandorla is, it's also referred to as a vesicle piscis, it's a mathematical shape like an almond that represents the vagina, it's used much in old religious art work. Then he has a tear drop falling from his left eye. With two small horns on his head. He is holding a crown along with a broken-off scepter. He has a chain on one foot that is broken, along with a bitten apple and the top half of the scepter laying on the ground. Quite a bit of symbolism!
Once again the Roman Catholic Church is glorifying and showing sympathy for Lucifer. And to place him at the pulpit called 'Seat of Truth' is saying much. Just another hidden image in the Roman Catholic Church that many don't know about. The Father wants His people to come out of her! Be a Berean and keep watch!
